FCE Crashing on Export
Hi! I am currently using Final Cut Express and working on a project that is currently 33 minutes. The video is a combination of .mov files and .avi files. I know that .avi is not the best for FC but haven’t had any problems during playback on the timeline. All footage is DV… no HD and project is set up at 720 x 480. When I render out as a normal QuickTime movie it works fine, but the quality is not all that great. When I render out using QuickTime Conversion for an mp4 it crashes FCE. This all leads me to two questions…
1 – Why is quality poor in regular QuickTime export? File size is huge but quality is horrible. It looks better when I use Conversion as mp4.
2 – Could the .avi files be the source for crashing while exporting using QT Conversion to .mp4?
Any help, suggestions, ideas are greatly appreciated.

How are you looking at this to judge quality. DV is a codec for TV, to judge that you need a TV connected to you system. Take this DV movie into QT Pro and try to encode it to H264. If you don’t have QT Pro you need to get it, it’s only $29.

Try exporting a version without these files. If it exports okay your answer is yes.You have to realize that once you start using formats that are not recommended you are “entering at your own risk.” FCE is a great product for what it does but it only deals with a couple of codec, you need to stay in these codecs. Transcode AVI clips (in QT Pro) to .mov DV and things will be much smoother. Get things right at the beginning of the project, in the long run it is almost always faster.

Thanks for the reply. I will review on a TV and see if it makes a difference. I usually make sure all files are good from the get go but had to take over editing unexpectedly and we are under a short deadline… I am use to working with FCPro so I am figuring out the limitations as I go.
I am off to convert files…
