FC Studio 5.1 Maintenance agreement
Posted by Erlend on May 11, 2006 at 5:30 pmHas anyone that has a FC Studio 5.1 Volume License with Maintenance received their Media-kits?
Apple tells me that they regard the 5.1 upgrade as “not significant” and not covered by the maintenance agreement.
I find this absurd as the Universal Binary-update might very well be the largest change in code since FCP 1.0…..John Pale replied 19 years, 12 months ago 3 Members · 6 Replies -

May 11, 2006 at 5:45 pmI would suggest you get in contact with a laywer and discuss this with them. But usually, the law seems to side with the companies. The only real solution to this problem is to stir a huge stink within this community and make it know to Apple.

May 11, 2006 at 5:52 pmBefore taking legal action, try again and demand to speak to a supervisor…you may have just gotten an ill informed person. Sometimes its a matter of persitence and speaking to the right person. Anyone who knows FCP knows the 5.1 revision is a significant one, despite the version numbering. Most point upgrades are free, and available in Software Update…this is not. They would not have such an elaborate upgrade procedure if it were not a significant update.

May 11, 2006 at 7:55 pmI’m sorry, John. You’re absolutely right. It just angers me when a computer company says such outlandish things such as what Erlend was told. Almost eht entire industry is fueled by greed rather than product and it really sets me off when I see this or hear of it.
Media100 did a similar thing to my company years ago so we decided not to renew the useless agreement they had. Now, you can see we wised up and got a real program to actually do some serious editing….
I agree with everything you said, John. FCP 5.1 is a significant update. That’s why its good to know if Apple’s stand is really a poor one and then consult with a laywer about this. I didn’t mean to jump the gun. It just strikes me raw that a company like Apple would do this. Hopefully, its just a misunderstanding.

May 12, 2006 at 9:03 pmThanks for the feed-back, guys.
I’m in Europe and have checked with both the local Apple Office, the Euro Volume License team and the FCP Business Developement Manager for Europe and they all tell me that Apple legally regards the 5.1 update as “not significant”….
It’s beyond me that they can do business like this. The license in question is for 42 seats so I would think it would at least be of some interest to Apple to keep us on the platform.
When Microsoft (for example) releases an update to an app we have maintenance for we usually receive the media 10-14 days prior to the product hits the stores… I think it is just sad that Apple have made such a poor descission.
So – if anyone, anywhere have indeed received 5.1 media under the maintenance deal please let me know.
