Fast movement issue Panasonic Lumix GX85

A pan that fast is never going to look smooth and clear. You don’t mention whether you are using progressive scan or interlaced video (at 24fps). Interlaced will allow you to push your pan a little faster before this kind of effect shows up – though it may have other effects which are unwelome for you. Obviously slowing your shutter speed a little and allowing a little more motion blur will also help a breath. Going for a very high framerate would help – but only if that is followed thorugh with a high framerate in playback, and supported on the viewers’ monitors. But there is always a limit to how fast you can pan before this kind of effect shows up. The speed you have tried to pan at looks way too fast, to me, for you to have any chance of an attractive result, It’s not really the particular camera – it’s that each little part of the scene is moving too far in each frame for a smooth and attractive look. But you are right : what you have does look horrible, sadly.

There’s no such thing as interlaced 23.976 fps video. But otherwise, Mike is completely correct: given the frame rate, you’re running into issues with the pan speed. Pan slower for smoother movement, pan faster for more motion blur. You could lower your shutter speed for more pleasing motion blur at the same speed, I suppose. Increasing shutter speed would make this look even worse.

One thing I notice is that there appears to be some kind of image stabilization going on in-camera that looks REALLY bad. In fact, it may be contributing to the problem–as it tries to stabilize and “catch up” to the movement, it may be introducing more judder. Put this camera on a tripod and turn the IS off; it may help.

If you’re not required to deliver 23.976, you could consider using a faster project framerate of 29.97, or even 59.94.
