I got an email to download a couple free FASST Apps and was wondering if I should install FASST Apps Titlestrip 1 if I already have Production Assistant 2 installed. Has anyone tried both?

Hmmmm. I don’t (yet!) have any of these plug-ins although some of them look mighty interesting. Downloaded the two free ones BUT, I can’t install them! “Error opening file for writing”.

I simply downloaded the files and tried to run them but no go. I have the email from Sony with new serial numbers but . . . .

I know this is a bit open-ended but, any ideas anyone? DO I need something else installed previously?

    Thanks for any suggestions all.

(Just noticed, lots of ‘buts’. Sorry!

The first 4 TitleStrips are the same content as GraphPak 1 & 2 in Production Assistant 2 so from a content standpoint you already have these lower thirds.

What TitleStrips add is the ability to create the Text for the Lower Third along with the graphic. This makes use of the OFX capability which wasn’t introduced until Vegas Pro 11.0 so these only work with Vegas Pro 11.0 & 12.0 and Movie Studio 12.0 while the GrafPaks work with earlier versions.

The TitleStrips are also delivered differently. Instead of them being nested projects, they are delivered as PNG sequences. This means two things for you: (1) They playback very smoothly so there should be no lag like some of the GrafPaks have, and (2) They are frame rate independent so instead of Vegas having to convert the 29.97 fps GrafPaks to 25.0 fps or 23.796 fps, we simply make a 29.97 fps, 25.0 fps or 23.796 fps image sequence to begin with. This yields better quality and eliminates ghosting.

I’ll let Graham speak about the new TitleStrip title editor and how much he likes it because I know that he uses it. In case you didn’t know, I’m the developer of all of the FasstApps so of course, I’d like you to buy them all. 😉

There will be a lot more TitleStrips to come so I would get the free one and see if you like the concept. Then you’ll know if you want to buy more when the next set becomes available.

Are you installing them with a Windows account that has Administrator privileges?

A FASST App dedicated Background Render would be good.
Yea, you could try this or that, but none is dedicated, one
where you can even close Vegas and it keeps rendering in the
    background.

    John,

That was exactly the type of comparison information I had been looking for on the website. Since there was no trial version and the video of the FASST App glosses over things very quickly, I was concerned I would be throwing away money if I already had Production Assistant 2. Could you comment if Production Assistant 2 will be replaced with a suite of FASST Apps in the future?

    Thanks,

    Mark

Actually, if you look closely you’ll see that the FasstApps are very similar to the process steps that you can add to Production Assistant so in a way, Production Assistant is already a “suite” of FasstApps as well as a way to chain multiple FasstApps together into a production chain. I can’t say what the future will bring but Production Assistant will not be going away if that’s what you’re asking.

John, you seem to have created some really killer apps for Vegas with FASST Apps. I just got the promotional offer from Sony for the two free apps and 10% off for this month. What a deal…if you have Vegas 12! Is Sony punishing us 11 users because we didn’t upgrade to 12. Makes no sense to me why Sony marketing would not extend the offer to all the Vegas users. The rush to purchase is gone.

[Timothy McCauley] “Makes no sense to me why Sony marketing would not extend the offer to all the Vegas users”

I’m guessing it’s a way that the Marketeers can try and entice/convert New Users into purchasers and convert recent “existing” VP Upgraders to be aware of bundles that may come their way in the future.

Now, if the marketeers were to open the offer to existing VP11 users, how would that square with the Marketeers strategy? It wouldn’t entice anybody to upgrade and it could also imply to new adopters that the value of the freebies was somehow what you’d get anyway?

No, Timothy, I totally get why SCS is done their strategy this way.

OTOH, if you could convince SCS of what I believe you are suggesting, and that it would improve their revenue streams, then you’d be pushing against an opening door.

[Timothy McCauley] “John, you seem to have created some really killer apps for Vegas with FASST Apps”

Thank Timothy. We were thinking along the lines of iOS/Android apps where they are really cheap and do one function very well. This seems to help people purchase just what they need and not a big plug-in that does stuff that they didn’t need. We’re hoping it appeals to more people this way.

I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time. Every time someone posts on the COW that they need some function that I know is in VASST Ultimate S Pro like batch rendering, I hate to say, “Oh you can buy a $169 plug-in just to get batch rendering”. Now I can say, “You can buy Render Assistant for $9.95 and get batch rendering”. It’s much a easier decision for our potential customers.

[Timothy McCauley] “What a deal…if you have Vegas 12! Is Sony punishing us 11 users because we didn’t upgrade to 12.”

No they are not punishing Vegas Pro 11.0 users, they are rewarding customers who have upgraded to Vegas Pro 12.0. After all, this is a business and they don’t make any money from people who don’t upgrade. It is another incentive to stay current on your software.

FasstApps like TitleStrip only work with Vegas Pro 11.0 and 12.0 because they use the OFX interface that was introduced with 11.0. If you have 11.0 you should upgrade to 12.0 without even thinking because it’s so much more stable. If you have Vegas Pro 10.0 or below, you can’t use TitleStrips anyway. CinemaLooks work with Vegas Pro 9.0 thru 12.0 so I guess they are leaving more Vegas Pro customers out of the promotion with that one.

I don’t control Sony’s promotions. Obviously a good promotion should incent your customers to buy more of your products. At least it is making more customers aware of the FasstApps which is a good thing for Vegas Pro editors from 9.0 to 12.0. The bottom line is that the FasstApps only cost $9.95 USD to begin with and you get a whole lot of productivity and functionality for a very small amount of money. I’m sorry if you feel left out because of Sony limiting their promotion to Vegas Pro 12.0 and Movie Studio Platinum 12.0 customers only.
