How can I fade in an object from left to right, or from top to bottom, or vice versa?

For example, if I placed a red rectangle in the middle of a photograph, and wanted it to appear by fading in from its left-side to its right-side, then disappearing by fading out from its left-side to its right-side, how would I go about doing this?

It seems like it should be something easy to do, but I can’t quite figure it out.

    Thanks for the help.

i think you’re looking for the linear wipe effect (effects>transitions>linear wipe)

it will wipe a layer on or off in any direction you want and has feather control to soften the edge as it wipes on.

Thanks, Kevin. I knew it would be something simple. I’m one of those overanalyzer types.

another way would be to make a mask for it, click on your layer, hit ctl+shift+N feather your mask out and animate it. this would give you more control later if you needed it.
