extremely slow log & transfer
it used to be quick, but now takes longer than the real-time duration of the clips. any advice?

Tell us the footage codec you are L & T! It makes a difference.

I agree with Steve that the type of footage is important.
Without that information my suggestion would be make sure you aren’t playing back any footage while doing the transfer/transcode. You are able to do so with Final Cut but it pauses the transcode process while clips are playing back.
