Extra frames appearing on edit to tape.
Posted by Jeremy Brettingham on February 26, 2007 at 6:43 pmI have a dual core 2.5 G5 with 2 GB Ram and am playing out (edit to tape – insert) 8 Bit uncompressed to DigiBeta (PAL). The clock drops in exactly on the right frame but at the end of part 1 of the playout the tape has gained 2 frames. In other words TC from Timeline (FCP 5.0.4) is say 11.30.00 whereas TC off tape when I check it back is 11.30.02. Can you explain & what can I do about it as I need the Tape TC to be identical to the timeline becasue I’m exporting my audio to OMFs.
Any help much appreciated. Cheers

What digital video card are you using? What driver version? Is the deck referencing Input Video or Ref? Did you try just putting SLUG where you have empty spots in your timeline?

February 27, 2007 at 7:33 amI have mailed Blackmagic and apparently this is a known problem with some VTRs (great!!) and they’re hoping the latest drivers will fix it. Meantime I’m stuck using Declink HD with the last driver set on FCP 5.0.4. But I will try your ‘slug’ idea. Do you think assembly might be more reliable?
Thanks

February 27, 2007 at 4:50 pmSorry not to have got back sooner – I’m using PAL 25 fps but did have to play around with the Playback delay – it’s back on 4 ff now but that might be to do with the deck I’m using. But certainly if your using a striped tape I would only use Editing rather than Mastering in the Edit to Tape window. Hope that helps.

February 27, 2007 at 6:22 pmHi Jezza
Thanks for the reply. What deck are you using- we’re using a DVW A500P Digibeta. Our playback settings are set to 4 frames. We usually use Mastering rather than Editing in edit to tape. I wasn’t aware it would make a difference – but I will try this at the next availble opportunity.
Cheers for your help

February 28, 2007 at 8:40 amDVW 500P – yes editing and mastering seem to make it behave diferently – don’t ask me why!! Good luck.

March 4, 2007 at 5:56 amChances are your setup is inserting at the right part on tape, but repeating the very first frame for 2 frames and then proceeding. If that first frame is something unmoving, then you may not notice.
Check at some intermediate spot to see if the timeline timecode and tape timecode is off by 2 frames.

March 5, 2007 at 10:02 amHi Neil
You’re right – I found this out the other day. The first frame of our edit to tape is always duplicated. Usually this consists of bars and tone so was difficult to spot – however, closer examination of the tape revealed that the sound, and the cut, weren’t actually starting until the second frame.
Rolling back to the 5.6.2 drivers has not solved the problem on one of the systems I tried although I have not had a chance to investigate this fully.
It does seem that this occasional double frame at the in point of our edit to tapes is the real issue here.
Any thoughts anyone?

March 5, 2007 at 3:58 pmMan, I’ve been meaning to get to this issue. Especially since one of my projects is a half hour show, and insert edits are pretty much undo-able with this issue. One of my systems is frame on accurate (the Decklink Pro) with the same deck (DVW-M2000). My new Intel system (Decklink HD Extreme) has this first frame duplication issue. It’s a real hassle.
Although I do not have any hardware or software solutions, my work around has been creating a correct master sequence, duplicating it, then pulling up the entire sequence one frame at the very first frame of bars & tone.
Maybe someone from Decklink can chime in on this one.
