  • External Video Not Playing – Only showing last frame played

Posted by Iguano on January 28, 2007 at 8:16 pm

I’m having a problem getting video to play on an external monitor. I have my Canon Xl1-S hooked up through Firewire and a video monitor hooked up through the S-Video port.

In Final Cut Pro I have View->External Video->All Frames checked.

Canvas is set to Fit To Window
Video playback is Apple Firewire NTSC
I have refreshed all video devices.
I have also made sure the XL1-S is turned on prior to starting up FCP.

When I play footage, it plays on the Mac but not on the external monitor. When I pause playback, the external monitor is updated with the last frame played. Every time I pause, the external monitor is updated but I can’t get it to play the video.

Any help on what I can do to get the video playing on the monitor?

    Thanks!

Sorry if this is a duplicate question – I searched and didn’t find anything to help me out.

My default answer here when ALL FRAMES is indeed checked…

Make sure none of your windows are overlapping and also check that the video in canvas and viewer is set to Fit to Window. A quick check to see if there are scroll bars in the viewer or canvas will tell you that your video is too big for the windows… make it smaller.

Also I assume the monitor is hooked up the the s-vid on the CAMERA? yes?

Another question… where is the media you are trying to play thru… it’s not on the system drive is it? That could be chugging you down quite a bit. Not recommended either.

    Good luck,

Yep, both the viewer and canvas are set to “Fit To Window”. Yes, the monitor is connected to the s-vid on the camera.

I have several drives on the computer. (I have a new Mac Pro) Final Cut Pro is located on the system volume, the video files are all on a different hard drive.

Still not able to play. Any other thoughts?

What kind of footage is this? Is it standard DV? Is your sequence setting for standard DV?

    Grasping now…

Ok – this is what just dawned on me and maybe this is the problem.

I have DVCPRO-HD footage in FCP that I’m trying to view over firewire through my DV camera, using my camera as a pass-through to the external monitor.

Is this the problem? If so, maybe I will just down-convert the DVCPRO footage to DV for this purpose. I only need the footage for the external monitor for some ADR work.

Yes — that’s the problem. Whew!

There are ways around this, but they get kind of expensive…

Downconverting is the way to go for what you want to do.

    Good luck,

no its not a problem. Go into your A/V setting and make sure your output device is set to whatever you’re using via firewire.

Uh, yeah, that IS the problem. You cannot play DVCPRO HD footage out thru firewire to a DV device and then to a TV. Won’t work. He needs to get an HD capture card or device like the Matrox MXO, or downconvert the footage to DV before he can view it thru a DV device.

Oh, and the footage will be Anamorphic, so you’ll need a monitor capable of 16:9 viewing…otherwise you will be seeing a stretched image.
