External Video in Final Cut on an iMac
I’m planning to buy an iMac for an off-line editing system, but I need to see my Final Cut project’s external video. I don’t want to go through the Firewire port (I need that for my Firewire 800 external media drive), so I’m planning to purchase a Matrox MXO2 mini. I’m going to use the mini display port, using a HDMI adaptor to hook up to the Matrox MXO2 mini and hook that to a 1080p monitor. Does this make sense? Will this work, or is there a better way, without spending lots of money?

OK, this is a fine idea…

This is not. The MXO2 mini will not work with an iMac. It requires a PCIe slot, something an iMac lacks. Or an Express34 slot…that only the 17″ MacBook Pro offers. Your only option is the original MXO, that connects via DVI. And Walter Biscardi (a head you see above) will be testing this out on older iMacs soon.

Nope. While the Mini takes in HDMI, and outputs HDMI, the way that it interfaces with the computer is via PCIe or Express34. Without THAT connection, your plan won’t work.

Original MXO…or 17″ Laptop…or refirb MacPro (I’ve bought that way for years), or NOTHING, as this is an offline machine.
