  • External monitoring: Kona LH card vs.Firewire

Posted by Harry Kafka on February 11, 2009 at 8:54 pm

While color correcting, I’ve noticed a difference in my external monitor between component via my Kona LH card and using firewire with my DSR 25 deck feeding the monitor.
The Firewire method makes the image slightly darker.
The color seems about the same.
Is the Kona method technically more accurate than the firewire?
    Thanks for any help.

Depends…how are you connecting the Kona LH to the monitor? The DSR-25?

I’d trust the Kona over the deck and FW myself.

The Kona is definitely more accurate than the DVCAM deck. The DSR-25 does not add NTSC setup (7.5 IRE) on its analog outputs – hence, the black level is too dark.

From Adam Wilt’s great DV FAQ site:

“Now, the Rest of Us may be using lower end gear: DSR-20s, DSR-11s, PD150s, even consumer gear. None of these low-end decks and camcorders have “add setup.”

So if you take a tape shot in a DV or DVCAM camcorder and play it back in one of these low-end decks, the analog output will NOT have setup. The playback will be fine in Asia, but it’ll be “too dark” in the Americas.”

The Deck is connected to a professional monitor with a BNC cable.
The Kona is connected to the same monitor with three component cables.
