  • External Monitor preference for PPro CC: Thunderbolt2>SDI or HDMI>SDI?

Posted by Mike Healey on March 3, 2018 at 12:42 am

    Greetings!

I want to take a ThunderBolt2 or HDMI output of my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) and send the signal to my Panasonic 17″ 1080p SDI broadcast LCD monitor. I don’t want to mirror the second screen. I only want to see the program video full screen. I’m editing in Premiere Pro CC. I’m guessing once I have one of these gizmos hooked up I’ll see the playback option in PPRO playback settings?

Which have you folks have success with out of these boxes:

    AJA T-Tap?
    Blackmagic Design UltraStudio Mini Monitor?
Blackmagic Design Micro Converter HDMI to SDI?
    KanexPro HDMI to 3G/HD/SD-SDI Converter?

    Thoughts and/or recommendations appreciated.

    Cheers!

Am using a BM Ultrastudio express. Works pretty well with PrPro. So, the UltraStudio mini monitor should work well too. Use the SDI input on my broadcast monitor. For FCP though, which keeps lagging during playback through the BM, I use a BM mini converter to take the HDMI from my MBP to the second SDI input on my monitor. For Color grading I switch back to the BM Ultrastudio while using FCP.

    Hi Kevin,

Thanks for your input. Do you have any experience with the BMD Micro Converter HDMI to SDI with PPro?

    Cheers!

I have the hdmi to SDI connected to my MBP all the time. So that I can switch to this when using FCPX. But, yes, PrPro works great too. But I’d rather use SDI output off the Ultrastudio when possible.

Ok gotcha! I only have 2 Thunderbolt ports on my MBP. Many times I’m working off two portable external hard drives with no loop thrus so using HDMI>SDI is the way I think I need to go at this point. It’s not for grading. Just to send the SDI signal to the Panasonic broadcast monitor for confidence and client viewing, etc.

    Thanks Kevin!

Yep. Should work. You can get the cheaper USB powered converter from BM:)
