External hardware for new Mac Pro
Please forgive (and advise) if this is in the wrong place because my troubles seem to be very specific. After ~7 years of being a Final Cut Pro shop we’ve moved on to the Creative Cloud. The first of our Mac Pros has died, to be replaced by a new black droid looking thing that is cluttering up the desktop (for fear that if we switched to PC, we’d never be able to open the old FCP project files). Unfortunately, the Mac Pro has no expansion slots so we need an external device (or series of devices) to interface with our monitor, tape decks, and sound board. I wouldn’t think this is a rare problem, yet I can’t seem to find a product out there that does that.
Aja’s 4k IO has all of the video components covered, but doesn’t have any audio inputs that aren’t embedded. That makes it impossible to record a VO in the studio. Black Magic’s UltraStudio 4k does have an audio input, but it doesn’t work unless you are also sending video down the stream that you need to remove later and it takes a lot to get it to work right. That seems awful for a decent workflow. This can’t be an isolated issue, other people must also record VOs in their studio – what do you all use or plan to use?
