  • External hard drive “freezing” during capture

(PowerMac G5 Dual Motorola, LaCie Porsche FireWire external, F.C.E. 3.0 HD)

After several months of no incidents with an external LaCie TB082LL/A 250gb USB/FireWire drive, attempted to use an external LaCie 250gb Porsche FireWire drive for capturing and storing.

Experienced constant “freezing” of video during several capture attempts: video would roll for no longer than 10 seconds before freezing for a few seconds, then continue to roll, then freeze again.

Detached the drive and used the G5 internal drive to capture with no incidents.

Reasons for this occurence from the experiences of others are few. One user in a similar situation claimed that the problem might be the leads on the external drive, and that they should be changed every six months.

I am in the process of testing the drive with a PowerBook in order to rule out a compatibility problem with the G5.
