external hard drive for cineform hd avi files
Posted by Scott Jensen on September 10, 2007 at 8:29 pmCan someone give some input on external hard drives. I need one fast enough (Cineform specifies 7200rpm) to edit Cineform Aspect HD files. I believe these files are around 100Mbps?
I’d like one thats usb powered, 200gb or higher and able to handle the data rate.
Thanks.

September 10, 2007 at 10:47 pmI doubt that you are going to find that fast a drive, especially one that is USB powered.
Take a look at the Western Digital “MyBook” drives. They are not USB powered, but they certainly do the job for me.

September 10, 2007 at 11:07 pmI would recommend the Free Agent eSata II drives by Seagate (750 Gigs should give you some room to do some uncompressed work). The speed is pretty amazing.
You will also need a eSata II card adapter and a Sata cable.
I think that’s the only way to go here for HD.
The eSATA II card will be cheaper on a PC than a Laptop, count around $50.00 for PC, and $80.00 for Laptop.
The whole thing should cost you around $400.00 at NewEgg.com.
Cheers,
Vince

When I used Aspect on projects (I use Prospect on my laptop now for compatibility with my workstation), I was having no problem getting two streams from a typical 7200rpm drive via FW. FW A has a datarate ceiling of 400 Mb/s and USB2 has a datarate ceiling of 480 Mb/s, but if pushed, FireWire can be a bit better in that it seems USB2 can have more fluctuation between peak and sustained data rate.
A bus-powered drive or battery powered drive fast enough for editing, if it exists in any practical form, would chew through battery power (bus-powered would drain the laptop battery) one way or the other.
