Usually – no. That is, if you use simple linear linking as in your case. There are situations when it can get slow if you link multiple expressions across comps which in turn are dependent on other expressions, but that does not seem to be the case here. I think your Illustrator layers are the culprit here as AE rasterizes them for every frame if you have continuous rasterization enabled. That can easily choke all memory in addition to the process itself being very slow. You may wanna check that and decide whether it’s rreally necessary to work with AI files.

I think I need to continuously rasterize because I am eventually playing the movies at 200 percent size on 24
