expression to take value from another comp

I’m building a virtual room which contains a hinged door and would like to be able to open and close the door with relative ease. I’ve built the door and frame as a separate comp which i’ve nested into the main comp and used the collapse transformations option.
Everything is fine and using the comp synchronise option, i can jump back and forth from the main comp to the door comp to adjust rotation keyframes, to allow the door to move. but i’m lazy-ish and also curious. 🙂
is it possible to add a null object to the main comp and have it’s rotation open the door?
The only expressions i use myself are built with the pickwhip, so i’ve no idea how to go about this.
