exporting video in final-cut express
Hi,
I’ve captured footage from a Canon HV30 HDV camera into final-cut express. It doesn’t seem like my program has compressor. What’s the best way to export footage into a self-contained quicktime file in PAL 16:9 and burn to dvd using dvd studio pro at highest quality?
I’ve tried several exporting options and they have all degraded the video quality. Is it necessary to have a compressor to do this or is it possible to do it all within final-cut express?Thanks!

Well, when you create a DVD, you’re down converting the HD to SD for starters… And I think HDV native isn’t supported in FCE… So there’s a hit there when it converts the HDV to the AIC codec. All that said, the best that can be done in your situation is to choose file/export/QT movie and use “current settings”. Open that file in DVD SP, and set the encoding there to be a CBR one pass at 7mbps if you have a program under an hour, or use a dual sided DVD to get to about 1.5 hours at that bit rate.
It should be using a 16:9 preset in DVD SP too, and don’t change frame rates.

You really need something like Compressor to do a proper HD to SD downscale.
Compressor has Frame Controls. SEtting the resize filter to BEST will create good looking SD footage.
So you export selfcontainted from fcp/fce
Open in compressor. Choose DVD Mpeg2 preset. Change the Frame controls. -

Let me get this correct. You have DVD Studio Pro but not Compressor. Compressor comes with DVD Studio Pro. And DVD Studio Pro comes with Final Cut Pro.
So why edit with FCE when you would have FCP?

I assumed the OP was going to another station that has DVD SP… not his station. That self contained movie is what will transfer to the other station.
