Exporting to Website
I’m trying to get video from FCP exported for website. I got some feedback from Walter Biscardi saying to use compressor, not FCP to get more flexibility in the quality and short conversion times. Walter said to start with Quicktime 7 download 300kbps setting and work from there, but I’m not sure how to get video from FCP to Quicktime 7. When I export using compressor it sends it to a batch page with a mpeg-4 NTSC Source Material setting and then I’m lost from there with choices like modem streaming, fast cable streaming, large and small progressive.
I’m under the gun to get this video ready for website. I’ve got about 260 FCP files of 2-3 minutes, and again need a way to convert in batches that will give me the best quality video, but won’t take forever in the conversion. The files have some color correction and a livetype bug throughout the video. I had originally converted to a mpeg4 format using the default settings and the video quality was poor. When I converted mpeg-4, using the medium streaming setting, the quality was better but it took 35 minutes to convert one file.
Any help is greatly appreciated! -

What version of Compressor are you using? If you’re using Compressor 2, under Settings, there’s a Web Download
option for Quicktime 7 compatible (H.264). Set a bit rate and you’re off!

My Compressor Version is 1.2.1, and I can’t find the web download option you mentioned. Do I need to upgrade my Compressor? Or is there a way to do it on the current version I have.

Open any of the Compressor presets, duplicate it and set these values that correspond to the 300Kbs in Compressor 2.

Compressor 2 is included with FCP 5.1 (or maybe it’s in 5.0.4, I can’t remember)
Do not use the “Export to Compressor” or “Export Using Compressor” from FCP. This will result in a much slower compression in Compressor because this method keeps FCP running in the background while Compressor does the work. This slows down your computer.
From FCP, Export > Quicktime Movie. UNcheck “Make Self Contained Movie.” You simply want to make a reference file, not a self contained movie which will take longer.
Quit FCP. Launch Compressor, bring that exported reference file into Compressor and perform your compression.
When I was running FCP 4.5 on my old G5 Dual 2.0 this method resulted in renders much much faster than allowing FCP to keep running in the background.
