  • Exporting Timeline to Tape with “Proper” timecode

Posted by Scott Bush on October 23, 2008 at 3:24 pm

I’m having a hard time figuring this out for some reason. Please help!

I need to export a reel from Final Cut to Beta-SP. It needs to have the “standard” timecode/black/slates/countdown. So it needs to start at 58:00:00 with black and then bars, etc. with the actual program starting at 1:00:00;00. I’m familiar with all the numbers and timing I need here.

My question is, how do I pull this off in Final Cut? Do I need to pre-stripe the tape? Or can I use Final Cut to write the proper timecode and print all in one step? Would I use edit to tape for this? Or maybe Print to Video?

I have an aja IO box which is controlling my deck, and the deck is an old Sony UVW-1800. I know how to record timecode on the tape from the deck itself, but am having trouble pulling it off from within Final Cut.

    Thanks,
    Scott Bush

    Scott,

You black the tape with about :10 pre-roll to your timeline setup. So if you’r timeline starts a :58 you would start at :48 or so.

Then use Edit to Tape and type in your starting TC.

    Have a wonderful day.

    Thanks, Chris.

So there’s no way to do this without putting timecode on the tape first?

    Not that I know of.

You always have to pre-stripe a tape. Always. Even with Avid, the gold standard, always needed to pre-stripe code onto the tape that the NLE could see, then add to. In the EDIT TO TAPE window, at the top, there is a way to stripe a tape with the proper code IN FCP! THis is handy. Click on that film strip up there.

    Ok thanks, guys.

At least the “stripe” button will come in very handy!

    It is very handy.

In your case, Scott, you will hit the Black and Code button and preset your timecode for 00:57:50:00.

Let it run for 15 seconds or so while it puts black and code on the tape. Then fast forward all the way and rewind all the way (aka pack the tape).

In your sequence, you can make sure your timing is good by setting the start tc of your timeline to 58:00:00. That way you can make sure your program is going to start exactly at an hour.

Then in the Edit to tape window, set the in point to 58:00:00. Drag the sequence from your browser to the assemble edit overlay of the edit to tape window, and as long as the timing of your timeline is correct, you program should start at an hour.

It is cool. We used to have to set the TC on the deck manually. This is a sweet feature.

Guys, there is one thing I don`t understand…
So far I am upgrading my equipment step by step. I bought FCS but my budget for some dv scope like DSR11 will have to wait for a few months.
SO, I bought Sony camcorder (DCR HC62E) to put out my videos via camcorder for now.
Yesterday I tried to “Edit to Tape” some test footage and everything was okay exept the time code.
Whatever I did the time code on the camera was always starting from 00:00:00:00!!!!
I did the regular procedure; tried to stripe the tape (film strip button).
The “CURRENT SETTINGS” dialog box came but after that “INITIALIZE TAPE” dialog box did not! It was missing! So I wasn`t able to write in the desired TC.
Anyway I recorded a few minutes of black on the tape and stopped it.
After that, I set the start TC in the down-left box in the “Edit to Tape”. When I dragged the sequence to assemble edit, the tape in the camcorder went fast forward towards the end of the tape, which is obviously understandable since it didn`t write in the TC I wanted.

So, the question is why is that? Is it because I recorded it on simple camcorder? If I tried it on Canon XL2 would it work (I am trying not to use that camera for playout)?
    Please help!
    Tnx!

[mario toni belamaric] “Is it because I recorded it on simple camcorder?”

Yes. You can’t do this with a DSR-11 either. You need a professional DV record deck with proper rs-422 control to make accurate assemble and insert edits.
