  • Exporting over 100 videos from FCPX….whats the best way?

Posted by Rocco Richardson on December 28, 2011 at 3:31 pm

I am very new to FCP and specifically FCPX, I have in the past used Premiere Pro to handle this job, but, was having issues on my windows PC and now I am using a MAC and have switched completely to FCPX.

My situation is this, I have to film 5 hour concerts then take the footage and break it into the individual songs to post for my companys website. I have a great work flow in FCPX to get this done rather quickly. I end up with a new project for each song, and in the project I add a simple title card in and out. Now, I have 100 projects that need to be exported and I can’ seem to find a better then to send each one individually to compressor. How does one handle this? There is not a way to select multiple projects, back in Premiere Pro, i was able to first send each sequence to encoder and then encode the entire batch, I thought I would be able to do the same thing with FCPX > Compressor. When I click send to compressor, it opens a new tab each time, and does not put all the projects from FCPX into one batch.

What is the best way to handle this workflow using FCPX? or Compressor? I thought this would be something common, but I can’t seem to find many people on here that have to export multiple vidoes at a time…is this a common practice?

Hi Rocco you would think you could do this but this is a feature that was removed – god only knows what batch export was removed …..

Seeing you already have the sequences you might look at projectX27 a fcpx to fcp xml converter – as you have fcp you can then do the batch from there … Wish there was a better way …

Looks like another item for the very long list for Apple’s feedback.

    https://www.apple.com/feedback/finalcutpro.html

You can do this very easily in FCP7.

There needs to be a way to batch export projects, and clips as well, for crying out loud.

    100 videos? Really? Ouch.

In the future, you might try creating longer timelines, combining your clips, exporting them in their native format, and using Quicktime PRO to chop it up into smaller bits that you can toss to compressor.

Until they bring this function back, you need to find a workaround.

Maybe someone else can come up with a more user-friendly one. If it were me, I’d totally do this in FCP7. I’ve done this for logging clips in 7. I placed everything in one big 4 hour timeline, applied my timecode reader, and broke it up into smaller chunks by selecting ranges of clips and creating sub sequences. Then I could easily select my subsequences and batch export them.

Thanks for all the feedback, I am glad to see I am not the only one who needs this feature!

I am going to look into putting FCP7 on my machine and trying the XML converter from original project. The issue I have is, compared to the way I used to do this in premiere pro, FCPX has actually knocked off a ton of time and with motion i can make easy templates to make my titles. So on the front end I have knocked off at least an hour of work, but, now on the output, I am having issues. I think the work around with the XML thing might be the best way to go. I am not really using any of the thing that don’t make the conversion.

Do you guys know if compressor 4 works with FCP7 or will I also need Compressor 3.5?

As for making a giant quicktime movie and cutting it there, that wont work for me since I have to make titles for them all first. and I actually have two of these concerts in January so it will be around 200 videos!

Thanks for your responses, It really goes a long way to even chat with others, even if its to find out Apple is the problem!

If you can get your hands on FCP7, you can do this work quite simply.

If you need to forge ahead with FCX, I’d either try using “export using compressor settings”, or just export using Command-E, to create files with the native codec.

Exporting using compressor settings would be a bit faster than exporting to compressor, because compressor won’t need to open and make you select your settings. You would need to use one of their settings, or open compressor and create your own setting. You can also save a bit of time by turning off “open in application”. Make sure the background is on, and do this for each of your clips. You won’t need to wait for each one to render or encode before you set up the next one.

Using command-e will create a new file about as quickly as your computer can copy the media. A minute or two for a four-five minute video perhaps? Then you can select all of your exports and use compressor to encode them all. This method will effectively double the amount of space needed for your media on your hard drive because you’re exporting the clips in their native format, but if space isn’t an issue, it’s another way to go.

    Good luck.

I had a similar situation, though only 27 (1 hour) projects. Using send to Compressor from FCPX, as you mentioned, makes a new batch for every sent project. So what I did was copy/paste the job from each batch (one at a time, obviously) into one batch so they could all be submitted at once. Not an optimal workflow but it worked!

I tried this, but I seem to only be able to paste 2 jobs into a batch. It won’t let me paste any more then 2…have you had this issue?

Did you try “Export using compressor settings”?

I just needed to send three projects to compressor and noticed that you are not able to paste while a job is selected. Click on a blank area in the batch to unselect the job, then you can paste.

WOW. Thanks to both of you! Mark and Dave!

Both solutions work, and will allow me to get this done in a reasonable amount of time. I think the “export using compressor settings” option is the way to go. First you need to set up a custom setting in compressor but then your good to go. It sucks that the destination does not come through as well, and you have to select which folder its going to, but with background processing and the share monitor it functions just like you want to handle a batch. And this is pretty much the same thing I used to do in premiere, selecting each sequence and specifying its location before going to encoder. Thanks for your help guys. I hope others can check this out if they the need to batch export.

Hi again, helpful creative cow forum people!

I am still having some issues with this mass exported project. I am attempting to use a custom setting created in compressor, and then using the “Export using Compressor Setting” option in FCPX, however, for some reason, FCPX gets the beachball and hangs forever whenever I select the custom setting. If I use a stock setting, all seems to work fine. However a custom one, just hangs. I have tried deleting and re-creating my settings, and now I notice that I only created on setting, yet two setting show up in FCPX, when only one exists in Compressor. This was of course after i restarted about 5 times to get the setting to even show up in FCPX. Any help would be appreciated.
