exporting on with clear bg
I have a pretty good key on this talent. I want to export him from After effect 7 and keep him on a transparent back ground so that i can put him in front of a few different backgrounds in final cut pro.
each time i try to export him using the animation compression he comes out on a black background. How do i export the keyed out talent on a transparent bg from after effects?

What Joey means by render vs. export is that you can add compositions to the render queue (the correct way) using Composition>Add To Render Queue, or you can use the File>Render option which is not proper. Aside from that clarification, he is correct on how you should approach this – Animation codec, millions of colors+ (the + means it has an alpha channel which holds the transparency info).
Also, you’ll get best results using the “straight” alpha option rather than the default “premultiplied” option. Straight alpha channels look really bad/weird in Quicktime Player, but will come into FCP looking correct.

Hi, not wanting to hijack this thread but I am also having a similiar issue but with a logo. When selecting “straight alpha”, it suggests that if there is transparency then you are also best exporting an alpha channel. Am I right in saying that you would then combine the two rendered files in FCP or Premiere to mask out the unwanted black and bring back the transparency? I have tried selecting “chroma” key which does take out the black but looks a bit rubbish and jagged.

No. If you render with the correct settings the Alpha channel is embedded in the file and FCP reads it automatically. Nothing to combine, key out, or extract.

Thanks, I use the render queue to render thing out of after effects. I am just used to saying exporting because of useing FCP. It worked out great the RGB + Alpha channel and he straight unmatted option worked great as well. Thanks

I tried doing the RGB + Alpha channel straight unmatted option and I am getting a green outline around the face of the person in front of the green screen. It looks fine in After Effects, but when I import into Final Cut.. it shows a green outline (halo). Any suggestions that I could try to get a clean image and have it look like it does in AE?
