  • Exporting Matrox HD Project To MPEG-2 DVD Taking Very Long

Posted by Volodymyr Kashuba on November 30, 2011 at 3:13 am

Project: Matrox HD 1920 x 1080i. 2 hours on timeline. The files are original files taken from AG-HMC150 AVCHD camcorder in .MTS file format.

If I export the timeline to MPEG-2 DVD format with CBR, render with maximum quality option enabled, and render with maximum depth enabled, this process takes 8 hours.

If I export the timeline to MPEG-2 DVD format with VBR 2 passes, render with maximum quality option enabled, and render with maximum depth enabled, this process takes 16 hours.

I wanted to ask is this normal for exporting to take this long on my computer with Matrox MXO2 Mini w/ MAX? Is there a problem with my computer, settings, or something else? What can I do to improve export speed of MPEG-2 DVD files?

Below are the specs of my computer. Windows 7, Adobe CS5, and Matrox are updated to latest versions. MPE GPU Acceleration is hardware enabled.

    MS Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1

Turn off MAX BIT DEPTH. Some things are unchecked by default for a reason.

    Hi Volodymyr,

Please excuse the brevity of my last post, I was in too much of a hurry. First, the MAX option on the Matrox MXO2 hardware devices is a hardware H.264 encoding accelerator – it will not speed up any exports to MPEG-2 formats.

That said, your system should export to MPEG-2 MUCH faster than what you are experiencing. I notice you have the GTX 460 graphics card installed. This is NOT on the Adobe-approved list for GPU-accelerated editing using the Mercury Playback Engine. However, you CAN enable this card and get better performance by using the simple instruction here –

    https://www.studio1productions.com/Articles/PremiereCS5.htm

Enabling the Nvidia card in Premiere will not only enhance editing performance, but may also help with the exporting speed as well.

Next, regarding export settings in Adobe Media Encoder, when exporting to DVD from an HD source, you would typically want “Maximum Render Quality” checked, as this improves the downscaling quality. The “Max Bit Depth” button is usually NOT checked – no advantage when working with 8-bit video.

With your system, exporting using CBR or 1-Pass VBR, I would expect a 2-hour HD project to export in under 3 hours, much less than the 8 hours you experienced. Note that SD exports to DVD should be almost 10x FASTER than realtime! These times exclude any rendering of red-bar areas of Premiere, which should be reduced or eliminated by enabling your GPU.

    Thanks

Thank you Jeff for traing to help me with this issue.
I understand that MAX will not speed up any exports to MPEG-2 formats. I just show it what I am workin whith.

GTX 460 graphics card I am using, is enabled exetly that way from the site you sugest.

I will try on my next project to live “Max Bit Depth” otion unchecked, but I dont think it will reduce the time from 8hrs to 3hrs. I think I try this already before and my time was abaut 5hrs on 2hrs timeline. All my project are that long. This is the reason I made thid discussion.

Direct export and unchecked render with maximum depth. Export of 1hour 45min took 1hour. This is the solution. Thank you Jeff Pulera for help.
