I just set up Quicktime Streaming on my server and I want to render some test movies to try it out (and to learn how to do it for real when the time comes.) Problem is, I’ve read that I have to hint the movie for it to be streamable, and that option is found in File > Export > Hinted Movie. Well, that option is greyed out for me, I’d like to know why that is, and what I’m doing wrong to not be able to use it. Any ideas?

If you have FCP Studio installed just render out a full res movie file from After Effects and then throw that into Compressor. There’s a ton of really useful presets in there that can be customized to meet your needs(like applying gamma corrections to compensate for the compression). I don’t know anyone that does real compression for web directly out of After Effects. You could also use Visual Hub, it’s incredibly cheap and gets great results.

By FCP studio do you mean Final Cut Pro? If so then I have to stop you there, I’m on Windows.

Sorenson Squeeze works really well, but you’re gonna have to pay for it.
