  • Exporting HDV to tape from Premiere CS3 to Sony Z7U

Hello all. I’m trying to export a basic sequence (no fx or transitions) to tape from premiere cs3 to my sony z7u camera and I can not get it to work– I need your help! Here is the basic rundown of what I’m doing.

    1. This is a HDV sequence
    2. my camera is on and set to vcr mode
    3. My preferences / device control is set to “DV/HDV Device Control”
the “options” are set to NTSC, Sony, Standard, Auto Detect. Online.
I have a preroll of 5 sec and the time code is offset by 0 seconds.
    4. My camera is set to 30fps 1080 progressive.
    5. The Project settings are 29.97 HDV 1080p
    6. My camera says HDVin iLINK on the screen. I have iLINK turned off on the camera.

When I choose File>Export>export to tape the “render and record” button shows up. I click it and wait for it to render. I can watch the blue bar move so I know its working. It takes a long time as this is a hour long sequence so I leave. When I come back the “render and record” button is back and I’ve got nothing on my tape. What gives?

I’m using premiere pro cs3.2 on a vista pc intel core 2 duo 6 gigs of ram 2.4 processor.

I think you may need to set the playback settings to got
out to your camera and the audio too…
Can I ask why you are goingback to hdv tape? There will be some quality loss as the original hdv will need to recompress to hdv…
test with a small portion if the timeline. Set the work area to the export length.

I’m exporting to tape because I’m working with another editor who is using Final Cut and this should be the easiest way of giving him a rough edit. If you have another suggestion I’m open to hearing it.
As far as the playback settings. Im not sure what to change? If I click project>project settings>general>playback settings the “external device” says none and export device says none. disable video optput when premiere pro is in the background is checked (though I’ve tried it both ways with out success). Desktop display mode is set to standard.
Am I looking in the wrong place? Thanks for your help.

So I should have mentioned I was trying this on a laptop. The camera has a 6 pin connection and the laptop has a 4 pin. I think that or the firewire card is the issue here. I’ll tell you why for anyone else who runs into this issue.
I decided to try this on my desktop. It has a 6 pin connection. I created a new project with the same specs and imported a hdv clip, placed it in the sequence and hit export to tape. It worked…

I would love to hear your other work flow suggestions though if you have any. Thanks!
