    Hello all,
I was wondering what you all think the best exporting option from Premiere CS6 is for the Blackmagic Production Camera 4K? I generally shoot in ProRes HQ in Film mode at 1080p. I’m currently not using Davinci Resolve (though it is installed on my computer). I’m also uploading my videos to Vimeo to be viewed in HD. When I export I use the .H264 format and my Bitrate Settings are set to VBR, 2 pass and Target and Maximum Bitrate are at 8. This produces a nice, fairly clean image when viewed on my desktop computer, but when I upload it to Vimeo, the image has noticeable artifacts caused by Vimeo’s compression.
So, given that Vimeo has their own compression, what codec to you recommend exporting your Blackmagic ProRes HQ videos as to alleviate some of the artifacting caused by Vimeo?
There may be a thread already about this, but I didn’t see it. If there is, please point me in the right direction.

OR: What are some best practices in exporting from Premiere to Vimeo regardless of what camera is used?

    Thanks in advance!

Premiere Pro CS6 should have dedicated Vimeo export options that do not require Vimeo to ‘re-transcode’ them.

What Dennis says – choose “H.264” as the format, and for preset, scroll all the way to the bottom of the (long) list of options to find VIMEO at the bottom.

Awesome. I’ll give that a try. I think I tried that before, but I’ll see what I come up with.
Will Vimeo re-transcode the file if I make any changes to the preset? Like for instance: if I change the frame rate from 29.97 to 30?

    Thanks!

Why alter the frame rate if the source is for instance 1080p30? That is really 29.97 fps

    Thanks

The Blackmagic cameras have the ability to shoot in 29.97 and 30 fps. If it’s a long video, I’d worry that something might be off if I shot in 30 fps and exported as 29.97. Is that incorrect?

Did not realize that BMCC can record a true 30fps. Note that 30fps is not “video legal”. If you are shooting footage exclusively for web use, then I guess you could get away with a 30fps workflow all the way through, but if the footage might EVER end up as “video” meaning Blu-ray, DVD, TV, etc. then better to stick with the 29.97 rate for acquisition/edit/delivery.

    Thanks

    Good to know.
So, with that in mind (that these cameras shoot at true 30fps), will Vimeo then re-transcode? What’s your best guess?
    Thanks

I’m not a Vimeo expert, but an educated guess would suggest that frame rate may not be that important – rather, they will want to see certain encoding parameters in regards to frame size, data rate, profile, etc.

But I can’t say with any certainty

    Thanks for your help.
I also had a novel idea: to look at Vimeo’s FAQ.
