Exporting clip with no sound, will not play on 4K tv because “audio format not supported”

I did! (Surprised? ???? ) The tv supports mp4, h264. It also says something about 3GP as the container but I see no such choice in Resolve.

Try lowering the bitrate to about 5000 KBps and see if that helps, sometimes H264 files have trouble playing at higher bitrates.

Mp4 H264 is a pretty vague spec. If it doesn’t support AAC then it might support an MP3 audio track. You can’t get that from Resolve though.

According to the Samsung manual the tv supports just about every codec and container, and it specifically listed MP4/h264 with HE-AAC audio. I don’t know about you but I’m really getting sick and tired of all these proprietary formats!!!

Anyway, I tried another clip I had that does have audio. It plays the audio for the few seconds that the clip plays before bogging down. Also, (and I know that this was not true at one point) but I actually used an mp3 clip in my video and was able to output audio in Resolve.

I am going to try playing an unaltered straight out of camera .mov clip later and see if maybe something I’m doing in Resolve is the culprit.

EDIT: Are you sure you meant 5,000 and not 50,000 bits? That seems like quite a dropoff from the “Best” setting of 80,000. Anyway I rendered at 50,000 bits and it played. Of course I had to choose a clip with no sound so I got the unsupported format error. Rendering another clip with sound at 50,000 bits. Fingers crossed.

EDIT2: Yes! Video played flawlessly with no perceivable loss in quality at 50,000 bits. Thanks, Jeff!

You really don’t need to export H264 at the maximum allotted bitrate because it pretty fast goes to the point where you’re not going to notice any difference and some hardware can’t decode it depending on what profile/level of H264 they support. QED i guess. If you want a master quality file I’d suggest a master format like DNxHR.

For example blurays max out at 48 Mbps for video and audio tracks combined and they usually won’t go that high depending on how much other stuff you need to fit on the disc.

Isn’t 48mbps a LOT more than 80,000 bits? Also, will a DNxHD/R file play nice off a USB drive on a 4K tv? I’ll probably try it out for myself before you respond, but…

No, but I said that it would be a master. Master files will retain their quality. Then you can make compressed versions from that master instead of making huge H264 files that have diminishing returns or don’t work at all if used with hardware/software that is limited by the H264 profile/level it supports.
