    Hello!

I just edited my first r3d sequence in CS6 and I’ve been having a lot of trouble getting my export right.

I have 2k RED footage that I edited as 2k and then tried to scale down to 1080p. I want my export codec to be ProRes 422. Every time I attempt to export this way, there’s a black box around my footage. What am I doing wrong? I know something must be off with my aspect ratio but I can’t figure it out. My goal was to edit and export with minimal loss but I get the letterbox no matter what I do. I even tried copy/pasting my clips into a new 1920×1080 sequence at the very end, but that didn’t seem to work either. Is it something to do with having “scale to frame size” clicked? I assumed not since my footage matched my original 2k sequence.

I’ve read just about every thread I can find on this, but still can’t seem to figure it out! I’d really love to once and for all understand if editing 2k (or 4k) then exporting 1080 is the best process and what I’m doing wrong here.

    Thank you!

AT the top of the OUTPUT screen it’s set to SCALE to Fit. So it is placing all of the 2K footage in to an HD 1080 frame. What you see is normal.

You can try the- other options, which will end up cutting off some of the left and right of your 2K image for 1080.

    Thanks Brian

But when I try the other options, it doesn’t actually change much. And do you notice how the black bars are NOT on the right/left sides in the export window but they ARE in the final video (see youtube screen shot).

    I guess my questions are:

is there a way to eliminate the black box altogether? is it related to what my aspect ratio is in my sequence? in my export?

is there a way to at least eliminate the side black bars you see in the youtube video?

is it correct to edit 2k (2048×1152) and then export 1080? do I need to copy/paste my edited clips into a 1080 sequence at the very end before export?

Hmmm. 2048×1152 is 16×9 ratio, so I’m not sure why you have the black bars in the 1080 frame at all. It should scale down perfectly.

I know. I’m literally at a total loss as I’ve researched a ton and tried just about everything and each export is black boxed. The only time it doesn’t do it is if I export at a higher res like 2048

Do you have any other ideas of what it could be? Does it relate to the “scale to frame size” option or having square pixels?
