    Hi,
We’ve created a new timeline in FCP with 10-bit uncompressed settings and dropped a film shot on XDCam onto it. The aspect ratio of the film is 2:35 (masked with widescreen effect) shot on native 16:9, but in order to colour grade within an SD colour space using Color, we choose SD 10-bit uncompressed as an export codec back to FCP. The new SD timeline is 4:3 and the film appears with the right aspect ratio. We then used Compressor to output to DVD Studio Pro and the aspect ratio appears without distortion on a computer screen. But on an HDTV, the titles appeared cut and the image cropped, even though they are within the broadcast safe limits. The image appears to be also slightly squashed on other screens. So my question is: what is the best way of outputting SD in FCP so it plays correctly in a wide number of television sets, whether HD, flat screen or 4:3? Thanks.

I think the best way is to create a 720×480 ANAMORPHIC sequence. Then send it to compressor and it will retain anamorphic, BUT make sure to tell the track that you want it to be letterboxed on 4:3 sets. It’s in the track properties window. Select the offending track and then you’ll see it in the lower right.

    Good luck,
