Export to tape – stops every few minutes
Posted by David Stack on June 24, 2011 at 1:28 pmTrouble exporting to tape via Blackmagic deck control
I’m playing out 30 min. shows and it stops randomly about 3 or 4 times in the show. Any ideas why? I had no problem with my old system on PP 2.0 and 3GB of RAM.
I’m currently working with:
MOBO: ASUS P6X58D-E
Intel Hex Core i7 970
RAM: 16GB
Microsoft Win 7 Professional, 64bit
GeForce GTX470
System drive: Western Digital VelociRaptor, 10,000RPM
DECKLINK HD EXTREME card
SONY BETA SP DECK, PVW-2800

June 26, 2011 at 4:45 amYou are most probably exporting to SD right? Have you tried rendering the entire project into a single file? Then grabbing that single file for export?

June 27, 2011 at 5:37 amHi David,
What version are you on?
Check that Autosave is switched off as you PTT. One of the versions (I’m not sure now I think it was CS3) had that issue from memory.
Hope that helps.

June 27, 2011 at 5:39 amSorry David I didn’t see that you are currently on CS5. My bad.
Check that Autosave thing out anyway and see if it makes a difference.
Best,

June 27, 2011 at 12:33 pmI’ll give it a try. I dislike the idea of having to do that when I hardly ever had trouble like this with my old system with 3GB RAM and PP 2.0. The only reason I upgraded everything was because my old motherboard hit the wall.

June 27, 2011 at 12:36 pmThanks for the tip, although if that were the issue wouldn’t it stop in increments of 10, 15, 20 or however many minutes I have set for autosave? These stops seem to be totally random.

June 30, 2011 at 3:27 pmUPDATE:
(Yes, I’m in SD.) I’ve been successful with disabling the autosave and by using your suggestion only for the more complicated shows. I didn’t want to comment too soon until I had a few shows successfully under my belt. Thanks! -

June 30, 2011 at 3:43 pmUPDATE:
Alex, I didn’t want to give the good news until I had a few shows successfully played out. I was skeptical, but the autosave WAS the main issue. I’ve had only one show stop, and was unable to get past that point of the show until I rendered out the problem area. For my more complicated edits I’ll have to render out as one file, which I did earlier today. Thanks!
Now I still would like to figure out why I cannot change the preroll from 5. Regardless of what number I set my preroll in the prefs the deck always uses a 5 sec preroll. I’m trying to get an answer from the Blackmagic/Decklink people. No answer yet. You don’t have any idea do you?
For shows we close caption I have a program that sends the CC signal to the deck through an encoder from another computer. If there’s been any mistake at all in the captioning I have to stop the show. Rather than start the 30 min show from the beginning I use to be able to set my preroll to 15 and that would give my encoder enough time to sync.

June 30, 2011 at 11:28 pmThat’s great David, glad to be of help.
Just re your pre roll, check your internal settings on your 2800. Change it there, on the machine itself and see if that makes a difference.

July 5, 2011 at 7:02 pmNice suggestions, but it didn’t work. I just got around to trying this (changing the deck setting), and it ignores the setting on both the deck and Premiere. No matter what I do it goes to a 5 sec preroll, unless I do a manual edit without using deck control from Premiere.
On the lovely occasions in which I must stop a closed captioned show to make a fix, I’ll either have to start the show over from the beginning, or it looks like I may have to use manual edits and hitting the space bar to play the timeline as the deck approaches the edit point.

July 5, 2011 at 11:13 pmMmmm bummer. Sorry David I’m all out of advice as I don’t have a Blackmagic card.
Best chase them up about it.
Good luck,
