Export to iPhone
Posted by Miodrag Ristic on July 7, 2010 at 2:13 pmI’ve been exporting for iPhone so far via Export to iPhone (m4v) automated setting and was happy with the quality,
but movies look squeezed. What would be best way to achieve 16:9 ratio with maintaining quality?
Anyone has any experience with this?

July 7, 2010 at 2:38 pmI like to use Compressor. I has a great pre-set. Go to the Settings tab in the bottom left corner and open the Apple, Apple Devices folder. Choose H.264 for iPod video and iPhone 640×480. It works great. Best of luck.

July 7, 2010 at 2:44 pmThanks Stephen, but that’s still 4:3, I get that pretty good automatically out of FCP,
but I’m looking for 16:9.
I don’t want it to look squeezed, I’m talking about HD source (DVCPRO HD)BTW, good job with that Motion DVD.

July 7, 2010 at 3:54 pmThanks Miodrag,
This is a cool feature about Compressor. When you are in compressor and drag the preset to your video, Compressor realizes that your footage is HD and changes the aspect ratio to the preset. If you go into the Encoder window you will see that the Aspect Ratio is changed into 16×9 (360×360). It works great and looks great.Stephen Smith

How about neither? 🙂

Nonsense! Having an iPhone does not make one a non-Luddite. Not having an iPhone does not make one a Luddite. 🙂
iPhone 4 is 960×640 and below that is 480×320 (so 3:2).

Tried that but then when pressed Submit, I’m getting message: ” Cannot submit batch
Unable to connect to background process.”I must have done something wrong when creating that custom setting for H.264 for iPod.

July 7, 2010 at 10:18 pmTried deleting .plist files for Batch and Compressor and that Custom Preset is still there.
Can’t Submit under any setting.I’m running Compressor 2 and FCP 5.1.4
Probably didn’t like that Custom preset being created ??
Searched on the web… apparently it’s a known issue and I have to reinstall Compressor and QMaster
Anyone with a more “elegant” solution?

It has nothing to do with the preset, it’s just that version of COmpressor went South. It used to happen to me, no matter what preset.
Reinstalling is the only way to fix it, really.
You can also try Compressor Repair, but not sure if it works with v2:

July 8, 2010 at 12:12 amYou don’t need a 16×9 and 4:3 iPhone preset. All you need is the default preset. If you drag a 4:3 clip into compressor and then apply the iPhone 640×480 preset it will make the Aspect Ratio 4:3 (640×480). If you drag an HD clip into compressor and then apply the iPhone 640×480 preset to it it will may the Aspect Ratio 16:9 (640 x 360). Compressor will do it all for you. I do this all the time with HD clips and the look fantastic.
