  • export to h.264…export to “ipod” settings are confusing me

So when i do the generic export to ipod function from FCP it gives me a file with the extention of .m4v When I play it in quicktime and get info on it, its tells me it was created using the h264 decompressor. So why when I use the h264 export option can I not get a file with the extention of.m4v?

I want to export to a video ipod but be able to tweek the settings. I know I can export any file from FCP and then brin git inot a lot of third party solutions to convert to ipod video format, but I dont wanna. I want to compress only once…..

Anyone, please drop some knowledge on me…..

    thanks,

    Ryan

    Have a free hour?

    Read this page:

    https://plasticbugs.com/?p=305

It covers how to make H.264 and MPEG4 files that are iPod compatible. I don’t think it’s been updated since the new iPods, however. Everything that page tells you will still work, but the newest iPods support even more video sizes than that page tells you about. Combine that knowledge with the facts from Apple’s current web site as to what the iPod can play:

ideo formats supported: H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; H.264 video, up to 768 Kbps, 320 by 240 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
