  • export to dv tape – choppy, sound loss

When exporting to dv tape (Premiere Pro 1.5, Panasonic dvx100A via Firewire) the resulting movie looks choppy in parts and the sound will even dip in and out.

    My specs
    – machine : 2.56GHz CPU (laptop)
    – external drive : 250G, 7200 RPM ATA drive over USB 2.0
    – camera : Panasonic dvx100a, over Firewire (for capture and export-to)
    – Premiere Pro 1.5

The footage captured fine (24P) – no dropped frames. I just can’t get it to export to tape properly – ie. without coming out choppy. Is my CPU speed too low ? Is the fact that the drive is external a problem, or that it is over USB (will switching to Firewire make a difference here) ? Are there certain Premiere settings I should be using ?

I’ve tried some things recommended on this forum already – like manually recording instead of using device control – to no avail. Please, please, please help.

By the way the “movie” in question is just a 5 minute student short. I did use some effects – brightness/contrast, color adjustment rgb & the hue/saturation one. There are also some fades, titles (5), and speed adjustments on a couple of the clips.

Exporting involves the hard drive reading 2 files at the same time, video and CFA, much more difficult than capturing.
A nearly empty, well defragmented IDE drive with a fast CPU might pull this off.
While USB 2 specs out faster than Firewire, it dont happen in real life.
Try configuring (Preferences>scratch discs) CFA files on the system drive and try again.
Failing that, add another internal drive or try a firewire external. Your CPU “should be up to it”, but it will work hard.
