  • Export Subtitles from rtf file or DVDSP to FCP?

    Hello,

Wow – the “search” function on the Cow leads to a lot of great material on this subject! I actually spent several hours yesterday and today following links and trying out demo versions of software suggested by several who use this forum. So, thanks to all of you!

However, after trying three programs and reading their manuals, I still can’t get files that I originally created as .rtf (STL) (and quickly and easily imported into DVDSP) converted to XML for FCP.

I have a situation where a client originally wanted subtitles on three very long videos on DVD, which I created using TextEdit. Now, my client would like to take a few scenes from each video and create Flash movies – with subtitles! So, I’m in subtitle no-man’s land.

I understand that I can burn a DVD with Subtitles and then convert it for editing to make the Flash videos, but that would be twice-compressed Flash video and I’d rather go what is already the longer way to have a nicer end product.

I read the manuals and searched the help files for Belle-Nuit, Subbits and TitleExchange. But, I tried each one and keep getting errors upon importing into FCP.

I don’t want to use a service for this as my client at least has Italian subtitles coming as well, plus they might want to use other clips down the road. So, I’d like to simply translate these .rtf files, sync them up to the edited video in FCP and cut-and-paste for Flash sequences as needed.

Does anyone know of an inexpensive program that simply does this file translation feature? I wouldn’t even need an expensive program to create subtitles in as, actually, I kind of liked more manually making them in TextEdit (mostly cutting and pasting with a transcript) while playing back the FCP sequence!

    Thanks in advance very much!
    -Pat

    Pat,
    Check out Andreas’TitleExchange (spherico.com)

Or, create XML files to have the Flash player display the subs.
    (Check out jeroenwijering.com)
Way better looking, since they’re not compressed, and they can be switched off.
Subbits, my subtitle editor, can create the XML. You can donwload the free demo, output a small XML and see how it is done.

If you’re not using a subtitle editor to create your subs, you are NOT doing yourself a favour. Timing is hell, and you miss out on all kind of handy features to make life easy…
