Export Quicktime Reference file Works in FCP 4.5 but not in FCP 5.1
I am working with FCP 5.1 on a MacBook Pro running OS 10.4.6 and FCP 4.5 on a Dual 2.5 G5 running
OS 10 3.9.I have been working on an FCP 4.5 project on my G5 for the last few weeks and creating reference videos that I then use in After Effects 7.0. Everything has been working fine until today when I migrated the project over to my new MacBook Pro which is running FCP 5.1. and After Effects 7.0.
When I try to create reference video files in 5.1, a reference file is not created. I confirmed this by creating a Quicktime file without the make self-contained optoin checked and then creating one with the make self-contained option checked. In both cases, a file of the same size is created (it takes just as long to create the reference file as it does to create the make self-contained file).
I checked some other posts and they said to render your video before exporting it, but the video I have created is a single layer with cuts only (and no audio). No filters or effects have been applied to any of the clips. For grins, I did a Render All anyway, but I still saw the same results.
I would greatly appreciated any suggestions anyone might have.

No idea, but why don’t you make both the G5 and the MacBook Pro run the same version of Final Cut, that could eliminate some problems?

I thought about that, but then I tried creating a new project from scratch on the MacBook Pro (which I’ll be doing when I’m on the road) and I saw the same results. So it appears to have nothing to do with migrating a project over from FCP 4.5. I also updated the MacBook Pro to FCP 5.1.1 last night, but that didn’t help either.

You would have to do some complicated tests to figure out where your problem lies. Was it in changing platforms or the updates? All most of know is that FCP 5.1 seems to be working as expected on the MacBooks and MBPs. But I personally don’t have one. Refefrence movies are not an issue for me.
However, sometimes dialog boxes that have radio buttons can get wonky. A button that appears to be pushed might unpushed. Those dialogs are system resources, not FCP-specific, AFAIK. Trying to figure it out might be more difficult than reloading the FCP suite.
Sorry not to have any better information for you. I have not seen any other posts on other forums about reference movies not working but you could search lafcpu.org and apple.com.

I just installed FCP 5.1 on the MacBook, which is brand new, this weekend. I haven’t done anything else with the system except copy my project files from my G5 over to the MacBoiok so that I could work on it there. I only discovered the problem after FCP 5.1 converted my FCP 4.5 files, which then apparently messed up the exsiting reference files I had created in FCP 4.5 because After Effects could no longer see the media.
I have seen a few other people report the same problem on Apple.com, but people are scratching their heads there too. It seems very inconsistent. I was thinking of installing FCP 51 on my G5, but since I’m in the middle of a project, I didn’t want to risk it.
For now, I can live with the problem because the files I’m using in After Effects aren’t very big and I have plenty of disk space. But I’d like to get the problem resolved before I move onto future projects that may demand more disk space.
