    SORRY if this is the wrong place _ I am exporting clips from FCP HD and didn’t see a forum specifically for streaming, so i am posting here. If this is incorrect, just point me in the better direction.

    i have been transcoding content for years and thought i had a good idea how to get a decent clip online for people to view. However, all my footage is taking sometimes near ten minutes to download when the link is pressed.

    the clips are:
    240×180
    15fps
    Bitrate limited to 200k
    Sorenson 3 (i wish i could use H.264 but having to download a codec to play the clip is asking a lot of users)
    Medium quality
    QUicktime files – offering real/windows is too expensive to host

    the clips are from 3 – 5 min. – which is kind of long, but i have seen 320×240 7 min. clips play just fine.

    My clips are launched using a javascript command, to alleviate download times if the clips were embedded in the HTML page.

    Your 4 minute clips are around 60 megabytes! https://www.reginahammond.com/video/ Are you setting the data rate to 200 Kilobits (proper) or 200KB (kilobytes – whoa!). Cleaner works in kilobits. For DSL you can make a 500 kbit rate mov at 320×240 that instantly starts playinig and doesn’t ever stop. QT exports are referred to in KiloBytes. I can’t remember the exchange rate, but I think you should limit it to around 40 kiloBYTES. Maybe even less with yoru small frame size. FWIW, I’d increase the frame size to 320×240 for sure. Here’s directory of some of my QTs.

    For a 4 minute video, like on your site, you should be looking at about 10megabytes. 6 times less than what you’ve got.

    But hey, after it downloaded the 60megs, they really looked sharp! 🙂

    They’re all sorensen 3 with mp3 audio track. 500kbit/sec, 15 fps.

    I will definitely check out the bits/bytes. I am used to working mostly in Media Cleaner, so I might have just buzzed through the settings like i would use in Cleaner. I have spent insane amount of hours rerendering these files and exporting them – and i am not getting paid! So it is very frustrating.

    I’ve been there. I used qt to output something once when I was used to cleaner. So when QT uses bytes (8 bits to a byte, base 8 math carry the 1, etc.) I think it’s basically 8 times the rate. So if you’re used to 200kb (pretty low really) then I think it’d be around 30KB. There’s something to the upper and lower case. I think bytes is upper and bits is lower. But the problem is nobody seems to conform, so it doesn’t really matter.

    Look at it this way, uncompressed video is 600KB a FRAME. So multiply that by 30 to get the KB/sec. 18000KB/sec at 30fps, 9000KB at 15fps. And that’s uncompressed! Let’s take it down to DVCam, 5:1. That’d be 1800KB/sec at 15fps. Now shrink the frame size to 320×240 which is 1/4 the size and you’ve got 450KB/sec data rate.

    So that’s roughly double the rate you were using. You were only using half of the data rate of a full on DV broadcast quality signal which is 450KB/sec at 15fps and 320×240 size. Let’s not forget your frame size was actually smaller too.

    Obviously the goal is to use an extremely compressed version, not a full quality qt for the web.

    Wow, that was some fun math. I wonder if any of it was even close to right. 🙂
