Export of 10min video taking 5 hours
Please tell me what is going on with my software..
Final Cut Pro 5
I edited about 10 minutes of video from a little Canon HD camera and a professional grade camera someone else used (can’t remember the name)- it took 5 hours to render this 10 minutes of footage which is ridiculous and now i can’t get the video to DVD. I get a white screen when it exports to Quicktime. I tried Quicktime conversion and it is still converting, 5 hours later. I do the small projects like this on Final Cut Express and its no problem. I wish i could use it but the video from the professional camera will not show up on there (Yet another problem) Please Help!
If you can tell me how to convert my Quicktime movie file that won’t show up on Final Cut Express that would eliminate the need for Final Cut Pro 5. -

It’s hard to diagnose what’s going on without some more technical information, but my first guess is that a “little Canon HD camera” is probably one that records in a non-editing format, probably AVCHD. If you look around the threads here you’ll see that this comes up quite a lot and the advice is always to convert it to a proper editing codec before you start editing. The problems you’re having are typical of what can go wrong if you don’t and I think that what you’re going to have to do is convert your footage to something suitable (I think FCP5 has ProRes so I’d use that, anyone know better??) and do it again. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Again, regarding the “pro” camera, it’s probably another format/codec thing but without knowing what camera and settings were used to make it we’d really just be guessing.

Nope Pro Res was introduced in FCP 6. With FCP 5 you are limited to DVC Pro HD or uncompressed.

Well we might be able to, but unfortunately you did not give us any information that might help us know whats going on.
What codec are the files you are editing?
What are your timeline settings?
How are you exporting?

Well in my opinion that is the WRONG way to go. Why go from a much more capable program to a program that will limit you even more when iot comes to codecs it is capable of editing?

[Zane Barker] Nope Pro Res was introduced in FCP 6. With FCP 5 you are limited to DVC Pro HD or uncompressed.
Thanks for clearing that up, I wasn’t sure whether I’d remembered correctly or not.
