  • Export: I want 1440, but I get 1920?

Posted by Joel Landis on November 10, 2009 at 6:38 pm

I’m trying to export a HDV (1440×1080) sequence into its native resolution. My sequence settings are correct (1440×1080, Upper, HDV 1080i60, etc). Each time I choose Export>Quicktime Movie>Current Settings I end up with a 1920×1080 frame size. I’ve tried making my own custom 1440×1080 export setting, but the result is still 1920.

What am I doing wrong? Oh, and I’m using FCP 5.0.4…

    Thanks

How are you determining that your final result is 1920? Quicktime Player? If so, its just telling you how its being displayed. HDV is 1440 but displays as 1920 (1440 pixels stretched anamorphically to fill a 1920 frame).

Drag the resulting file back into the FCP browser…does it report 1920?

Hmm. If I bring it back into FCP, the clip has the correct frame size (1440). The quicktime properties (7.6.2) read the format as 1440×1080, but the “normal size” is 1920×1080. Also, After Effects reads the frame size as 1920×1080. Is there a flag that only FCP can read for frame size?

This is very normal, John. Would you want to look at a video that is squished horizontally?

After Effects is a compositing program and you would want to composite full frame because that will be the final product when aired, right?

Programs these days are smart. They now know when you are working with DVCProHD, HDV, XDCAM HD or EX, and so forth. Its nice to use a program that you don’t have to change a bunch of settings around so that you can see your video properly.
