    Hey all,

I’m trying to put an explosion over a piece of footage. I have a nice fireball explosion matte that has a black background. It looks good when I put it over the footage in “add” mode with one exception. There is a faint glow where the background of the matte was. Obviously the light from the explosion makes the background not entirely black.

It’s subtle, but you can clearly see the edges of where I placed the matte. Is there a simple fix to this?

    Thanks!

The simplest fix would be adding a Color Correction > Levels effect to the footage layer and increasing the input black parameter until the background of the explosion footage is truly black.

If the glow extends far beyond the border of the footage then the above technique probably won’t work. In which case you should try using a heavily feathered mask to fade the edges.
