  • Exploding a Butterfly into lots of smaller butterflies

Posted by Tim Bowen on November 3, 2006 at 10:06 pm

    Hey Folks,
I have a Butterfly image that I want to explode into lots of smaller Butterflies…. some exploding forward into the camera, etc. Any suggestions on how to do this? I’m on AE7 with CC and BCC4 filters which I’ve played around with some, but thought I’d ask…
    thanks,
    Tim

That sounds like a Particle thing. If you don’t have Trapcode’s Particular or Particle Illusion, you might want to click on Dan Ebberts head and scroll down to, “Building a 3D Particle Generator”. Download the project files.

You can supply your own particles, Dan uses tga’s and psds, but there is no reason you can’t use an animated butterfly comp as a particle. Most of Dan’s particles are 128×128.
Open the comp, Basic Explosion, or Explosion with Physics and delete all the particle layers (starflare.tga) and then Alt drag your butterfly comp onto the remaining particle layer, replacing it with you butterfly animation.

If you want to know how to do an animated butterfly, click on Aharon’s head and scroll down to his Flock of Birds tut. Just use butterfly parts.

So you can have your butterfly cruising around, then drop in your Butterfly explosion layer to get an explosion of Flutterbyes.

And, these are true 3D layers, so with a little repositioning of the camera you can get a near butterfly trajectory. It’ll go right by your ear. Or you could fly through the resulting buterfly cloud.

Yeh, I don’t have Trapcode filters, although I’d love to get them at some point. I’ll try those other tutorials THANKS!

After you’re through with your project you definitely should take a look at it to see how it could have helped. There is even a pre-made project with butterflies.
