Hi – I need an explanation of the 5:4 and 4:3 thing. I captured on 5:4 – 720 by 576 etc since this is the default – but i always thought i was operating at 4:3 – then since i’ve been looking at sequence settings for the first time recently i’ve seen it’s set at 5:4 – which is 720 by 576. if you are capturing off standard def – mini dv pal – it was filmed at 4:3 – then are you meant to capture with the 4:3 sq setting? What is the standard – what are you meant to use? For normal television – should it be on a 5:4 sequence or a 4:3 sequence?

    Hi Clea,
Just forget about the 5:4 issue. That is the aspect of a PAL movie when is displayed as square pixels. In that case you get the same proportions whatever is your clip: 4×3 or 16×9. This is what you normally get when you open a PAL movie with QT player.
When those pixels are displayed properly the screen will show the correct aspect ratio.
So if you are working with PAL let the 5:4 set in the capture and in the sequence settings. Just check the “Annamorphic” if you are capturing or editing 16×9.
    Cheers
    Rafael
