November 1, 2005 at 7:05 pmMuch nicer than some of the stuff I get asked to do around here.
Don’t hinge your whole career in the industry on being able to be “the best”.
There’s a lot of mediocre art out there from people making a killing in this field. I know people who think the titler built into Premiere 6.5 is the living end of MoGraphics.
What you’re doing is miles above what I’ve seen from other people.
I mostly get asked to do titles, the occasional masking, and such, so that’s about what I do out of AE. That suits me fine, and the less 3D I have to deal with the better.
So, if something strikes you as “eh..” about your abilities, don’t force a career change on yourself out of self-doubt. There will be someone out there who thinks it looks fantastic and will pay you a great deal of money to do it for them full time.

Critique: I would adjust the “aqua” blue in the first few frames to match the blue of the rest of the animation. Also, the 3d model looks very plastic, maybe a metallic look that includes reflections would be better. Might be nice to see shadows cast from the floating text that land on the model. Lastly, the edit seems a bit repetitive- you see the model in every shot, almost full screen. Think of a progression- perhaps each shot reveals a little more of the model, then resolving to full screen?
Overall, you have a decent design sense.
As to your questions about money, do it because you love it. Even if you make lots of cash, it’s no fun to do something you don’t like all day.
Also, this is just my opinion, try to type without tons of abbreviations. You will seem more intelligent to people who don’t know you, and your ideas will be communicated more clearly. And a job in design is all about communicating ideas clearly.

November 1, 2005 at 9:07 pmThis is why you have budgeting on your projects.
It’ll depend on your markets you’re trying to go after.
Do they have someone else as equally skilled that charges less?
Go to some of your potential competitors and get bids on work. Find out what they charge. Offer your own services to them and see what kind of percentage deal they’d offer you.Are you located someplace that’s lousy with talent at all levels? (NYC, LA, Chicago, etc)
How many years experience do you have? Time factors in on your side. I know so-so editors who get buckets of money/work thrown at them because they’ve been in the industry a long time. I also know really skilled editors who are VERY green who can’t get work to save their lives.
Those factors determine where you can place yourself pricewise on your projects.
I would also advise you to go check out the Cow’s business forum since there’s people hitting this question out a thousand times a day over there, and you could wind up learning about your specific market by reading some posts.
Just don’t expect AMPAS to roll up to your house and offer you money for uncontracted freelance. 🙂

November 2, 2005 at 1:25 amTo be frank I think this piece represents the work of a small news affiliate. Not quite major market graphics but good for a small to medium town graphics package. It is less of the ‘hip’ graphics like a Shilo but more like the shiny, red, blue, purple, gold look that the news stations can’t stay away from.

November 2, 2005 at 3:55 amOverall it has a very nice professional look, especially the mix of colors and blending modes – however there are a bunch of things that, were I your art director, I’d want changed or fixed before handing it off.
– There doesn’t seem to be any motion blur on some of the faster motion – especially when things fly by the camera while very close to it. I can see letters and things a lot more clear then I should be able to – it’s a little disturbing.
– Some of the speed changes seem a bit abrupt for the overall feel of the piece, which is more staely or elegant.
– The flash of light is too abrubt on the fade out. I’d give it a few more frames to go from 100% to 0%.
– The way all of the letters fly down at the end, again, bothers me because of the lack of motion blur.
– The way the small leters fly on is not nearly as pro looking as the rest of the piece – I’d go with something simple and elegent, as opposed to the individual letters flying on.
Just my 2 cents…
