  • “Esc” button doesn’t work in capture now

I’m using FCP 6 on a macbook pro osx 10.5.6
    capturing from a panasonic dvx100.
When i do capture now and try to end a capture by clicking the escape button, it doesn’t work and i have to abort by clicking the stop button on my camera. i’ve tried deleting preferences, doing disk utility, i’m at my wit’s end!
    any clues??
    thanks!

Does the tape run out before you hit ESC?

No it can be anywhere on the tape it doesn’t matter, though sometimes a prompt will come on on fcp after i stop the tape on my camera and it says “the tape has come to the end…” but that’s probably just because it tricks fcp into thinking that. i think the problem is somewhere in my fcp. any ideas?

[Jacinto Astiazaran] ” i think the problem is somewhere in my fcp. any ideas?”

Nope. I don’t personally ever use cameras to capture from and I’m thinking it might be something in the dialogue between FCP and the camera.

Are you sure the ESC key isn’t working? If you have a large drive and don’t set a file size limit (or set a really long one) in preferences, it can take a VERY long time to close the file. During “Capture Now” FCP builds a temp file the size of the available space (or the size of your file size limit) in the scratch disk during capture and then ‘trims it down’ when you stop capture by pressing the ESC key.

If this isn’t the problem, then Walter is probably correct…your camera is not communicating correctly with FCP. You may have to capture from a different device.

It happens if you’re doing a capture, and while capturing you decide to look at your Facebook page, send an e-mail, or fine-tune that graphic in Photoshop. If you are in the middle of capturing, and you click elsewhere, into another program or even within FCP, the Escape key will not recognize that it’s supposed to stop the capture. Make sure that the capture window is the active window (clicking on it while capturing will confirm that).
