  • Error when opening an exported .MOV

I edited a project last year, and needed to burn another copy of it for something. I still have the all the original files on my hard drive, but when I try to open the .MOV file in Quicktime or in FCP it says error missing FIN. I know that this means that a render file could be missing, but what I don’t understand is why an exported .MOV file would need any outside files to open. I’m confused, can anyone help?

That typically means that you exported a reference file rather than a self contained file. I always discourage that, because if anything in your original timeline changes, the reference files becomes useless, as you have seen. You’ll need to open the project and see if you can recreate your final, probably re-render, and then export a self contained QT.
