  • Error Reading Rotated QuickTime (.MOV) Clips

I’ve run into a bit of a snag. My new digital camera records HD video in QuickTime format (.MOV). When I rotate these files (using other software) and save them in their proper orientation, Vegas still displays the file in its original orientation, despite the fact that QuickTime and other players recognize the change and play the movie in its saved format. I’ve tried saving rotated versions in multiple programs and playing the rotated versions in multiple programs; all show my clips in their rotated format, but Vegas still imports the files in their “sideways” versions. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem? Many of the clips from my new camera will be unusable if Vegas won’t read the rotated version. ??

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Vegas can do the rotation by itself. You don’t need third party software.

    Bob,

Thanks for your help! I should have mentioned that I had attempted to rotate the clips in Vegas, but I always end up with a large frame of background aound the clip, so that the clip appears in just a small frame in the center of the screen. (This does not happen for me when I rotate clips of other file formats using external software and then import them for use in Vegas.) Is the resulting frame a necessary artifact of rotation — or am I doing something wrong?)

Feel free to respond; I’d love your help. However, I’ve just realized that there is a Vegas Basics forum (not sure how I missed this), and that this question belongs there, I am sure. So sorry!

When the camera records an image, it uses a particular aspect ratio. The horizontal dimension is always longer than the vertical. If that image is rotated 90 degrees, it will not fill the screen. Any software which does fill the screen is either cropping or distorting the image. Vegas maintains the correct perspective. It gives you the tools to crop or distort if you wish to fill the screen, but it leaves that decision with you. It sounds like your other software is not offering that option.

Just go to the project properties (File | Project Properties) and change the Output rotation to whatever you’d like (i.e., 90 clockwise, 180 inverted, or 90 counterclockwise). You can also do this at the clip level in the Media properties. This works in Vegas Pro 9.0 and 8.0 (you didn’t say what version you were using.)
