Hi guys, I know that this question has nothing to do with FCP itself but I am sure that FCP editors will have a great input on it. I am feeling some annoying stiffness and pain (sort of – more like a muscle injury) in my wrist and forearm. I am going to check at the doctor this week bt I would like to ask you lot about how you deal with Repetitive Strain Injury or how you prevent it. Have any of you suffered from this? Is there any tools, such as a mouse or tablet that makes for a more ergonomic experience?

I know its a long shot but I am also sure this is a common subject in everyone’s minds.

Look forward to hear all you guys experiences about it.

    All the best,
    Pedro

    Hi Pedro,

I had the same symptoms – actually radiated up to my shoulder – and found a trackball completely eliminated all the discomfort in my wrist. After trying a bunch I’ve been using the Logitech TrackMan Wheel for 7 or 8 years now. It took a day or two to get used to but I couldn’t do without it now. Your wrist maintains the same angle so there isn’t any muscle fatigue or stress on your tendons.

Other places have it cheaper and with free shipping. Check buy.com

Hi Joel, thanks for the reply. Did you have to go trough any treatment or just the trackball made it go away?
just curious, it doesnt mean I am not going to check.

    Speak soon.

I had the self same, to the point of being unable to work for any longer than about 10 minutes without a lot of pain.

My solution (after doing the doc route – who’s only suggestions were ‘Don’t do whatever hurts’ and ‘We can give you a steroid injection’ – something I would be EXTREMELY wary of) was to buy a Wacom Intuos tablet. I now exclusively use that, and it’s completely cured the RSI. I tired a trackball but not for me; the pen style used by Wacom suited me fine.

Don’t hesitate, whatever you do do it now!

    Jason

    Hi Pedro,

I wore a wrist brace when the pain started. That helped alleviate the pain while I was still mousing, but made it awkward to hold a camera, so I had to come up with a different fix. I found the trackball helped and after about a week with it I was pain-free.
