I know you can start editing with out transcoding in Premier but would it be better to transcode to a different format? I am using a PC and record a lot of AVCHD footage what format should transcode to without losing quality? Should use a .wav file or other. This not for youtube.

DNxHD 145…or Cineform. Any conversion will lose some quality, but these are pretty good formats… DNxHD 145 is used for broadcast work as a final delivery codec, and Cineform is a fairly lossless codec as well.

    .WAV is an audio format…

If your machine can handle avchd then there is no point in transcoding.

What I am worried about is when I do color grade or Chroma keying and multiple layering with AVCHD material. I have tested on my new machine but I don’t want to get surprised.

    Avchd is what it is.
Transcoding to another format will be easier to edit but wont give you any extra info.
If you do decide to transcode make sure you have enough disk space.
    You could consider using proxies.
