December 7, 2005 at 4:31 pmOpen up the mixer and do the panning from there. You must first select all the tracks and make them all mono, or as I like to say “Unstereo Pair” them which you can do from the modify menu. Be prepared to remix the session as your music will be louder since you are essentially doubling it up.

December 7, 2005 at 4:32 pmHi,
First off, make sure that the none of the audio u want panned left is on the same track as those that you want panned right.
So assuming that your client wants talkie panned left and music and effects panned right :
Arrange all your talkie on consecutive tracks (lets say A1-A4)
Arrange your music and effects also on consecutive tracks (lets say (A5-A10).Now select all your audio and hit CMD+OPT+L (there is menu option for this as well, but i can’t remember exactly where it is). This will break your stereo pairs.
Then select all the talkie clips and on the MODIFY menu, find AUDIO and choose PAN LEFT
Do the same for the music and effects but select PAN CENTER.To check that there are no mistakes, I would suggest muting all your music and effects tracks and scrubbing through your timeline while watching the audio meters. You should not see any activity in the right channel. If you do then there is a stereo pair that you have missed. Break it the same way as above.
Check the right channel as well. You will also have to make sure that your levels are not overshooting again.
Sorry for such a long post.

December 7, 2005 at 10:11 pmFCP is so unexpectedly cool. They really did ask the right questions and solved some important issues.
A split is a split, Left Right, what are you talking about, or should I say what is your client talking about, if you have a person talking and all his/her track is on ONE track there is not left or right its mono full on. One track can not contain a left or right.
Click on the timeline, go to the sequence menu, select settings, click on the dual mono radio button, select from the drop down menu how many track you want, click OK.
Go the timeline, on the a1/a2 icons click control and mouse click (or right mouse click) and select which track you want that timeline track to go to, IT WILL BE MONO, IT WILL GO OUT ON ONLY THAT TRACK! If left means track 1, and right means track 2, you know the rest.
Bada BING! Apple saved the day with that one.

December 9, 2005 at 12:23 amBlub (or Chris) thanks!!! I cut daily News on FCP and we always pan our tracks hard left or hard right. I’ve always done that after editing. I followed your instructions and now my audio tracks are panned left/right depending on the track I put ’em on! Saves lots o time!
Cheers!
Ted
