    Hi all,

I don’t normally use FCP, I’m an after effects person. I’ve been asked to insert some footage into a sequence in FCP while the assistant editor is away.
Now, I have footage exported from AFX with fields. I can’t get it to show up properly in Final Cut. I’ve tried upper and lower, both in rendering from AFX and matching in the “Sequence Settings” of my sequence in FCP. I’ve set the field order of the file in FCP to all variations with no effect (as FCP doesn’t seem to detect field order on import, but leaves it as Not Set).
Whatever I do or try, the video, when played back, is horribly jaggy and generally bad quality. Now, I’ve been working in post for 2.5 years, and I’ve never had this issue with fields before – it must be something to do with a setting inside FCP right? Previous experience with fields and other programs has been painless.

Specifically what I’m trying to do is a text crawl. Forums in general tell me that FCP is NOT the tool to use for credits and text crawls, hence the use of AFX, rendering to fields, and trying to import into FCP. I’d like to get the fields thing happening for smoother motion on the text crawl.

Any suggestions? Am i missing a setting? Have i forgotten to tick a box??? Usually between forums and the help files I can figure most things out, but I’m completely stumped as to why I can’t get decent quality playback in this instance.
    Regards,
    Scott.

Do all your AFX output settings (aspect ratio, etc.) match the sequence settings on FCP? What type of file are you exporting to FCP (most likely QT, but what flavor? codec, etc).

What is the format of the existing FCP project? (DV? uncompressed?)

    All the best,

All the settings match, and I’ve tried ever other permutation of unmatching settings I could think of. I’m outputting a Quicktime from AFX, have tried using multiple codecs including the Blackmagic 10bit uncompressed we’re editing in (format of the existing project). Have also tried uncompressed, DV, motion jpeg, Sorenson, Mpeg4, you name it. Codec doesn’t seem to have any real effect.

I’ve tried matching the AFX settings in FCP, and also creating sequences with different settings in FCP and THEN going back to AFX to match these… and despite the settings matching, I still can’t get correct display in FCP. I shall take a screenshot from FCP tomorrow morning and post so you guys can see what I’m dealing with.

    Thanks,
    Scott.

You need to judge the output on a video monitor.

Looking at the FCP windows isn’t going to give you an accurate idea of the actual quality, neither in terms of sharpness, density nor color.

To get an accurate assessment of what you have, output via a broadcast monitor. Always.

    Hope this helps.
