Elgato Turbo H264 HD and Qmasters Cluster
Hi,
Does anyone know if using the quicktime component in compressor with one of these devices can also be used with multi clusters? I mean, I know its possible, but I was wondering if the fact that qmaster dedicates cores to compressing means it would confuse this device and would end up making the whole process slower or something.

I have one of these…and you need to use THEIR interface for the device to work. And it does not take advantage of all the processors. The device adds it’s power to one processor. I believe. I can’t be coupled with QMASTER or Compressor.
The Compress HD from Matrox also is either Compressor and multiple cores, or just the unit itself. I found that the unit tended to be faster than all the processors though.

Shane, you can use it in compressor by selecting the format as “QuicktTime Export Components” and then set the encoder type to “Elgato Turbo.H264 HD”, on the inspector panel. When you use compressor this way, it still gives you the option to use multiclusters when you slick ‘submit’, but I wasn’t sure how this works alongside a turbo or whether it could even potentially be a disadvantage?

Really? I think I need the latest drivers then…
Run a test. Do a compression in Compressor using the Elgato and NOT the cluster. Then another using the Elgato and the cluster. See what happens.
This is how you find things out…by trying them.

I doubt this will work to your advantage.
Even if segmenting occurs on the cluster, you don’t have the elgato hardware on the different clusters. Yeah, it’s likely that the turbo h.264 is meant for a one system output.

Thomas, the sole purpose of the Turbo H.264 was created solely for the MacBook Pro laptops. Its also used in older systems, but if you have a newer, say post 2007 Mac Pro, you do not need this device. Even my older Mac Pro 2007 system can render an H.264 video at the same speed as the Turbo H.264 device.
There’s no benefit unless you have an older system or a MacBook Pro and I’d bet the new MacBoo Pro systems will outrun it now with the quad core i7 chips installed.
