    Hey all, need some help,

A client of mine has been working on a project in Premiere Pro CS4 for some time. However he wants me to take over on my system (FCP 7.0) I figured the best way to get his project into Final Cut would be to export it in PPro as an EDL, then relink the media in FC.

It seemed to work fine, I was able to import the EDL project in FC. All of the in/out points and timecode seemed to be correct. Although no of the clips kept their same name as the original, they were all labeled UNTITLED. This is going to make relinking a very frustrating process.

Any thoughts on how to keep in tact the file names?

    Thanks

EDL technology predates nonlinear editing systems by many years. So file names are typically not part of an EDL specification. (as there were no such thing as video “files” in those days.)

My understanding is that EDL’s should be used if you want to recapture from his tape based sources.

If he had CS5, he’d be able to export an FCP compatible XML project that you could simply open an reconnect to media (assuming a compatible media type). So maybe you could send the PPro Project to someone on the board here that has CS5 and they could convert it for you and send you back the FCP compatible XML.

    either way:
I’d suggest he output a Mixed down clip of his edit that you could then drop on a higher layer of your sequence. This will allow you to visually match your conform to his edit for accuracy by muting and unmuting the top layer to check and make sure the clips match.

    does this help?

Thank you so much, we upgraded him to CS5, exported as an XML instead, and reconnected media in FCP. Worked perfect

    Cheers
